There were other Harbert or Herbert families in Grundy Co. MO who came there from Ohio in the mid-1840's and before that from Loudoun Co VA. John S. Herbert b. 1817 VA, his wife Rebecca (Crawford)b. OH, and their children and his sister Jane b. 1810 VA, his mother Mary "Elizabeth" (Wood) Herbert b. 1789/90 VA all moved to Grundy between 1844 and 1846 from Guernsey Co. OH.

John's parents were William Herbert b. 1780-1790 who married Mary Elizabeth Wood in 1807 in Loudoun Co. VA. William Herbert was on 1810 Loudoun census near "Jno." Herbert age 45 + [b. bef. 1765], likely his father. William had a brother John b. 1787 who married Lettice Hutchinson in Loudoun - both brothers married by a Methodist minister and both brothers moved to Guernsey Co. OH in about 1823/24 with their families. They may have had a younger brother b. 1790-1800 as male of this age on 1810 census with Jno Herbert.

Children of William Herbert and Mary Elizabeth Wood include John, Thomas, and Jane and 2 other sons and 4 other daughters whom I have not identified.

William's son John married Rebecca J. Crawford in Ohio, had sons Henry Clay 1842 and Thomas J. 1844 in OH, then rest in MO: Mary E 1846, Wm. 1848, Sarah 1850, Martha 1852, Salome 1854, Alice 1856 and Ulysses 1862. Henry Clay married Mary Leeper and had John William, Evan B., Hugh L., Mabel, Hiram B, and B. Franklin and step-sons James & Andrew Leeper. Thomas J. married Mary ? and had George S and James W. Salome married Silas Brown. All lived in Grundy Co. MO in what is known as Herberts Corners or Four Corners. John had a carriage/wagon making business, was a farmer, and also started a school.

John S. Herbert's brother Thomas moved from Ohio to Grundy Mo about the same time, but is not on 1850 census. In 1860 Grundy Co. he is shown as age 37 b. VA, wife Mary 39 b. Ky, children Wm. b. 1847 MO, James b. 1849 OH, Mary J. 1856 MO, E.A. [female] 1857 MO, Martha A. 1858 MO and Almeda 1859/60 MO. In 1870 census Thomas is shown as b. in OH not VA and his wife's name is now Bettia A. age 44 b. OH. He has same children except no daughter E.A. any longer but now also has sons John b. 1862 and Thomas b. 1868. His wife "Bettie" was Elizabeth A. White. Thomas's dau. Almeda married David Enos Eads. [Note: on another post, someone claims Thomas and Bettie had a daughter Lucy Catherine b. abt 1866 who later married Daniel Enos Eads after Daniel's first wife, Almeda Herbert, died, but this Lucy was certainly not on the 1870 census and would have been only 4 or so. In any case Lucy & David Eads had Bessie, Thomas Milton, Maude, Allie, Louis Clark, Pearl, Lucy Mabel, and David Franklin. Lucy Eads d. in So. Dakota 1937 but was buried in Grundy Co. MO. ]

John Herbert b. ~1783, son of Jno. Herbert who married Lettice Hutchinson is on 1830 census of Guernsey OH but Lettice must have died by then. They are living 2 doors down from (Mary) Elizabeth (Wood) Herbert and her family and the family of Wm. Leeper is next door. He is shown with two sons 1 5-10, 1 10-15, and 3 daus. 1 5-10 and 2 age 10-15. In 1840 he has a wife and 3 new children 1 m. 05, 1 m. 5-10 and 1 f. 0-5, but none of the prior children are with them - either grown or living with other relatives. 1850 census of Guernsey shows John age 67 b. VA and wife Susan (Cullen) 50 (b. 1800 Ire.)no children. His son from first marriage, John T. is living nearby age 30 b. VA with wife Eliz. 24, Anne 6 and Granville 4. There is also a James Herbert, 17, working as laborer with another family -may be John & Susan's son. The near neighbors are Hutchinsons and Cullens. In 1860, I don't find any of them in Guernsey Co.
