James Wood stated: "there should not have been any other Hanveys in Virginia in 1849 to 1861 other than james who married susan carter."
I have images of the 1850 and 1860 Census records from Leesburg, Loudon Co., Virginia that both list James D. Hanvey - the 1850 census record lists him as Jas Hanvy and the 1860 census record lists him as Jas D. Hanvey. The names of the wife and the children help confirm that these records are for the same person:James Decatur Hanvey.
Civil War records also indicate a Private James D. Hanvey from Loudon County as being part of the 8th Regiment Virginia Infantry, Company H.
James D. Hanvey was married to Emma Littleton. Emma Littleton's line goes back quite a ways into early colonial America.
I am having trouble identifying the parents of James Decatur Hanvey (aka Jas D. Hanvey, aka Jas Hanvy).
