MURDER -- A negro by name of James HANNOVER, of Sacramento, came to his death in this city on Saturday by being stabbed by a negro named Charles GIDDINGS. The 2 were engaged at a game of cards in a saloon on the corner of Market and El Dorado streets, when a dispute arose, from which hard words passed, when GIDDINGSdrew a dirk and stabbed HANNOVER in the breast, from which he died almost instantly. GIDDINGS alleges self-defense, as HANNOVER had taken a knife from his hip pocket and opened it before the fatal blow was struck. This remains to be proven.
GIDDINGS attempted to make his escape out of town but was overtaken by Justice BOURS who arrested him and lodged him in jail. The prisoner was taken before Justice BOURS for examination on Saturday evening; but the examination was waived by his counsel, and the case will come up before the next Grand Jury.
BURIAL of HANNOVER -- The funeral of HANNOVER who was killed on Saturday by GIDDINGS, took place yesterday at the house of William ROBINSON. The cortege consisted of 15 carriages, and several horsemen. It was probably the largest colored funeral that has ever taken place in this city.
