I know I'm late to the DNA discussion on the Hanks groups 1 & 2 but I have to say that these two groups are completely unrelated to one another, these two groups don't have a common ancestor, their DNA is so different its like looking at two different surnames. The problem is that both of these groups claim descent from the same family in Richmond county VA,if both of these groups are from Richmond county this means there are two different Hanks families in Richmond county that are not related to each other.
Out of group 2 I would say that the line of Epiphroditus Hanks is perhaps the most likley to connect back to Richmond county, the other lines in group 2 are difficult to nail down.In group 1 the line of Abner Hanks is the most reliable,Abner was from Richmond county without doubt, two other lines in group 1 are very likely to connect to Richmond county, the lines of Luke & Abraham Hanks who were in Pr. William county with Robert Dale who happens to be the brother of Thomas Dale who was the father inlaw of Abner Hanks. The name Luke is rare in the Hanks family, the name started with Luke Hanks Sr. and was carried in this one family from Richmond county.
With group 1 we have multiple lines that can be traced back to Richmond county and their DNA is identical,it is clear that many Hanks from Kentucky and Indiana don't descend from the Richmond county family. What is needed is DNA from descendants of Turner Hanks whose family never left Richmond county and from descendants of Moses Hanks and Abraham Hanks son Luke who left Pr. William county and moved to NC and then to Kentucky.
