Hello Wayne,

I agree with you there is a lot of confusion regarding the Luke Hanks of Richmond Co. probably due to both having had a wife named Elizabeth.

Luke I born c. 1681 and wife Elizabeth had children Sarah 1711, Luke II 1715, Dawson 1717, Alexander 3 Oct 1719, and Lucretia 1 June 1722. It is unlikely this Luke and Elizabeth had a 15 year gap and then another group of children.

Luke II born c. 1715 and died in Lanc. Co. in 1757, married first Elizabeth and second Sarah and had children: Turner born 8 June 1737 married Million, Luke born c. 1739, Sarah born c. 1741, Abraham c. 1743, Mary born c. 1745, Moses born c. 1747 married c. 1768 Agatha Dodson, and Martha born 26 May 1752. I suspect the Dale wife was Elizabeth and she had all the children except Martha who was the daughter with the second wife Sarah.

Luke III born c. 1739 may have been the one who went to SC. However, there is a record in Pr. Wm. Co. Va. dated 21 Nov 1788 (Magazine of Va. Genealogy) Petitions of Pr. William Co. Nov. 1788 Town of Dumfires, merchants and freeholders….Luke Hanks. There is this record of Luke in SC - 12 Feb 1785 – Turkey Creek Baptist Church Abbeville SC – brother Luke Hanks and his wife, Nancy Hanks, place letters of membership. (provided by Melissa Jones) I find it unlikely Luke would have been in SC in 1785 and back in Va. in 1788. However, the DNA record seems to establish Luke of SC as a Richmond Co. descendant and the Luke of Pr. Wm. does not appear in the record after 1788 to my knowledge.
