It is unlikely that there is any genetic connection between the North Carolina Hanks and the Mercer and Nelson Co., Kentucky Hanks. The latter are very, very, very likely to be Nancy Hanks' cousins.

DNA results can be found here:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~fabercove/HanksDNA.htm

Dennis Hanks lived in the household of Thomas Lincoln in Indiana. Dennis is a cousin of John the Rail splitter Hanks who was one of Abe's cousins and whom Abe identified as a cousin in writing. DNA testing from this line (kit # 21548) places these cousins in Y chromosome Group 1.

Meanwhile, the Lincoln Co., NC Hanks (kit #11733) is so far in a group by itself.

There is lots of documentation for the Hanks family that was in Mercer County, KY when Lucy was charged with "fornication" (the charges were dismissed when she married Henry Sparrow - who very well could have been the father of Nancy or Lucy's possible second illegitimate child Sarah). They were never shown to be in North Carolina. The documented migration path is Richmond Co., VA to Hampshire Co., VA to Mercer Co., KY to Nelson Co., KY. (outlined in http://durer.press.uiuc.edu/wilson/html/779.html )
There is a second Hanks family in Mercer in addition to the Joseph Hanks family - that of his brother John (whose descendants are also in Y chromosome Group 1). This family stayed in Mercer County after Joseph left. There is no doubt that Dennis and John the Rail Splitter are descended from Joseph Hanks of Nelson Co., KY.

Eventually someone will get around to testing a lock of hair for Y DNA from Abe Lincoln or one of his children, I suppose, and put the Enlow as father hypothesis to bed. They won't have to dig up Tom, as I am sure there are plenty of living Lincoln and Enlow cousins to test against. Note that it is much more likely that if an Enlow was involved it would be one of the ones in Hardin Co., Kentucky - not one from North Carolina. Herndon investigated numerous versions of this rumor which you can get to from the index of Herndon's Informants here: http://durer.press.uiuc.edu/wilson/html/795.html
Note the Enlows denied the rumor.

The 1809 birthdate comes from Abe himself, not his son Robert.
