There are a lot of different guesses about the parents of Nancy Hanks, mother of the president. The Shipley hypothesis, as far as I can tell, has its earliest telling in an article to the Indianapolis Journal in 1874. You can read it here:

You can also search this board for "Lincoln" and probably learn about the controversy. There are few adherents of the Shipley hypothesis here, but truthfully its as likely as any in my opinion. Since Nancy was probably born out of wedlock, her Hanks family relatives tried to cover up the story or didn't really know it. You can also learn a lot more from the reference in the internet URL above which is a document known as Herndon's Informants (search with the word Hanks - you will get 10 pages of hits). William Herndon was Lincoln's law partner and was obsessed with learning the truth about Lincoln's ancestry (he says Lincoln told him Nancy was illegitimate).
