JOHN HANKS, son of John and Catherine Hanks was born 2 May 1728 in Richmond Co. Va. This John Hanks may have been the same who married Susanna and recorded the birth of Elijah on 19 Oct 1766. On 7 Nov 1768 (Richmond Co., Va. OB 16) the grand jury presents Thomas Hanks, John Hanks and Joseph Hanks of NFP for absenting themselves from parish church one month. On 4 July 1769 (OB 17) John Hanks summoned for failure to attend church in North Farnham Par. On 2 May 1770 (OB 17) John Hanks was a witness for John Yerby for one day. On 3 Nov 1778 (OB 18) John Hanks witness for Samuel Woolard agst. Charles Hammond for three days. A List of the Taxable Property Within the Precinct of Farnham taken by William Smith 1782 shows George Hanks, John Hanks, and Samuel Woolard. The same list for 1783 shows John Hanks over 21 with Abner Hanks age 16-21. The 1784 list has John Hanks and Abner Hanks two white tithables. The 1785 list has John Hanks over 21 with Elijah Hanks over 16 and Abner Hanks over 21. Abner Hanks is of record in Richmond Co., Va. until 1788.
John Hanks is on the Woodford Co., KY. tax list as early as 1791 and shown as John Sr. in 1796. He is listed in 1810 census as a pensioner. The 1820 census shows him age 45 and older with one female age 45 and older.
The children of John and Susanna Hanks include George Hanks b. by 1760, Abner Hanks b. circa 1764, Elijah Hanks 19 Oct 1766, Lucy Hanks born by 1769, and possibly John Hanks Jr. b. by 1774.
George Hanks, son of John and Susanna Hanks of Richmond Co., VA. was born by 1758. He married Elizabeth Dale a daughter of Thomas and Alice/Ailsee Dodson Dale. Elizabeth was born 2 Jan 1758 in Richmond Co., VA. George and Elizabeth Hanks had Alsee born by 1783 (likely 1779) and married James Brown 15 Mar 1799 in Mercer Co. Ky., consent of George Hanks for daughter, and surety with Hickaway Bailey; Winney Hanks born 27 Oct 1781 NFP Registers Richmond Co., Va.(both Alsee and Winny are Dale names); Mary Hanks who married Nelson Pullen 8 June 1815 in Woodford Co. Ky., consent George Hanks, father . (Based on the census she was born between 1794 and 1804 but her marriage date makes it more likely her birth was 1794 or earlier. Nelson Pullen adjoins George Hanks on the 1820 Woodford Co. census.) George Hanks is of record in Fayette Co. Ky. by 1788 and Woodford Co. by 1791.
Abner Hanks, son of John and Susanna Hanks of Richmond Co., Va. was born circa 1763 according to information given in his pension record. In Woodford Co. Ky. 18 Mar 1813 Abner and Frances Hanks of Gallatin Co. KY. sold land on Greer’s Creek adj. Elijah Hanks. From Searching for Hidden Dales vol. VIII – Mary Dale, daughter of Thomas and Alsee Dodson Dale, born 1765 and died 1806 Woodford Co. Ky., married 1786 Abner Hanks and had Matilda 10 Dec 1788, Thomas 11 Mar 1791, Susan 22 Aug 1793, Mary 5 Mar 1796, Elizabeth 6 July 1798, Alsie 15 Feb 1800, John Dale 20 April 1802 and Martha 4 Aug 1804. Abner married several times and had numerous children.
Elijah Hanks, son of John and Susanna Hanks of Richmond Co., Va. was born 19 Oct 1766. He married Winnifred Dale Bryant, daughter of Thomas and Alsee Dodson Dale in March 1792 Woodford Co. KY. On 3 Sept 1798 Elijah and Winney Hanks sold 48 ac. on Greers Creek Woodford Co. Ky. to Dawson Brown. On 2 Aug 1808 Elijah and Winney Hanks sold land “at fork of the great road from Versailles to Delany’s Ferry” to the trustees of the Baptized Church of Christ of Newhope. Possible children include Sydnor D. Hanks. (Baber has the father of Sydnor Hanks as John Hanks Jr. However, there is no record of a John Hanks JR. in Mercer Co. Ky. Sydnor Hanks first appears in Woodford Co. on the 1816 tax list which places his birth year about 1795. His age on the 1810 census would be about 15. Both George and Elijah have males in the proper age range but George’s male is still with him on the 1820 census and Elijah’s isn’t.)
Lucy Hanks, a possible daughter of John and Susanna Hanks, was born by 1769 to have been over 21 when she married Henry Sparrow in Mercer Co. KY. in 1790. "I do sertify that I am of age, and give my approbation freely for henry Sparrow to git out Lisons this or enny other day, given under my hand this day, Apriel 26th 1790" Witnessed by John Berry and Robert Mitchell. On 25 May 1790 the Commonwealth agst. Lucy Hanks….for reasons appearing to the court the suit is ordered to be discontinued. Note: The only Hanks families in Mercer Co. KY. in the time period Lucy is of record there (1789-1790) is John and Susanna Hanks and their children George, Abner, and Elijah. Considering her birth date fits in with the birth dates of these children and they are the only Hanks family in the immediate area, it is logical she is a sibling. Her children include James Sparrow, Thomas Sparrow, Henry Sparrow, George Sparrow, Elizabeth “Betsy” Sparrow, Lucinda Sparrow, Margaret “Peggy” Sparrow and Mary Sparrow. Affidavit of W. Arch Sparrow 6 Aug 1922 – age 72 yrs., father was James Sparrow, brother of Henry Sparrow, George Sparrow, Thomas Sparrow, Betsy Franklin, Lucinda Campbell, and Peggy Ingram. I have also heard my Uncle Henry say that his father, my grandfather was named Henry. Mr. Thomas Hanks of Anderson Co. (KY.) had a long conversation with me in which he said that my grandmothers’ name was Hanks. (Lincoln Museum, Ft. Wayne, Indiana) Note: Regarding the Sparrow children’s names….James and Mary were the names of Henry Sparrow’s parents. Thomas was a brother. Lucinda and Henry are obvious. George and Betsey were brother and sister in law to Lucy Hanks Sparrow. The pension application of Henry Sparrow was filed 2 Sept 1833. He was 68 years old, a resident of Washington Co. Ky. and drafted at Mecklenburg Court House Va. in the spring of 1781. He was born 9 Oct 1765 in Mecklenburg Co., Va., lived in Mercer Co., Ky. upwards of 40 years and moved to Washington Co. near the Mercer line some few years back.
John Hanks Jr. – Baber notes that John Hanks III, son of John and Susanna born 20 Oct 1765 according to a Bible record. If this is correct then why is he not on the tax list under father John in Richmond Co. in 1783 through 1785 when he would have been age 18 through 20. If John Sr. did have a son John, then he was likely born after 1770. Baber also claims Sydnor D. Hanks as a son of John Jr. However, there is no evidence of John Jr. in Woodford Co. with a male child who would fit. A John Hanks is on the 1810, 1820 & 1830 Henry Co. KY. census. He cannot be the son of Abner as Abner’s son John D. Hanks appears in the 1830 census as well. He may be the same John who married Amy Swift in Henry Co. in 1814.
