My great-great grandfather was William Frederick Hanke (a.k.a. Frederick William Hanke). He was born January 24, 1841 in Lenz, Poman, Germany. He was married to Dorothea Augusta Garbrecht (a.k.a. Augusta Dorothea Garbrecht) on April 21, 1868 and they had one son, Charles (or Carl or Karl) born January 14, 1869. They settled in Hemlock, Michigan, William died in Hemlock January 24, 1912 on what would have been his 71st birthday.
His death record lists his parents as "Joulet Hanke" and "Mary Burmeister".
However, doing a search on the LDS site www.familysearch.org, I found this information:
On the LDS site is a family tree file compiled by a man named Norman Charles Draeger. His information lists my great-great-grandfather as "Friederich Wilhelm Hanke" born January 24, 1841 in Lenz and christened February 21, 1841 in Lenz. It lists his father as:
Johann Gottlieb Hanke
born 23 Feb 1804 Lenz, Pommern, Germany
Christened 12 Mar 1804 Lenz, Pommern, Germany
Married 2 Dec 1830 Lenz, Pommern, Germany
Died 6 Aug 1871 Lenz, Pommern, Germany
And it lists "Friederich Wilhelm Hanke"'s mother as
Anna Maria Friederike Burgermeister
Born 1805 Lenz, Pommern, Germany
Going back one more generation, Mr. Draeger's information lists the father of Johann Gottlieb Hanke as "Christian Friedrich Hanke, Sr" and says he was born about 1864 and died September 10, 1837 in Lenz. It says that Christian Friedrich Hanke Sr was married to Maria Lupke and that their oldest son was "Christian Friedrich Hanke", born about 1797.
This is the information listed for Christian Friederich Hanke, Jr. on the LDS site:
Christian Friedrich Hanke Jr.
Born Abt 1797 Lenz
Wife: Dorothea Marie Schwantes
Born 1798 Lenz
Their oldest child is listed as "Wilhelm Friedrich Hanke", born July 15, 1831 in Lenz, christened August 14, 1831 and died September 23, 1841.
So, if Mr. Draeger's information is correct (and I haven't been in contact with him at this point and have been unable to verify this information so far) then that would mean that my great-great-grandfather (born in 1841) was a first cousin to the William Frederick born in 1831.
