Hi Pat,
There seems to be no question that Columbus W. (Born Alfred?) and NAB were brothers - NAB born in 1845 and CW in 1948. They are first found in the 1850 Cenus of Decatur County GA being raised by the elder Sarah Harrel - while NAB went off to the Civil War (I'm sure you're already aware of NAB's documented Civil War service??) They are the only Haney's in the County in the 1850 Census - althrough Archibald Haney's large familiy is found in teh 1840 Census (also the only Haney family then). My current theory is that I suspect these boys were the children of a son of Archibald Haney and a daughter of Sarah Harrell. By my calculations it was Archibald's so Hiram Haney who fathered the two boys... Sarah Harrells daughter's name is not known.
The boys and Sarah are still found in the Decatur County, GA 1860 Census --- seems that Columbus (aka C.W., Columbus and Washington Haney) left for Texas by 1868 with his wife, but NAB and his wife stayed in Decatur County until after the death of Sarah Harrel (who lived with NAB and his wife "Lizzie" - see the 1870 Census)that I estimate to be around 1874, when NAB and Elizabeth followed his brother to Texas.
I have just recently been in contact with the mother of a male descendant of Hiram (William Patric Haney) and he is in the process of having his DNA testing done to compare to mine (will take 8-10 weeks). Although that wont confirm Hiram as the father it is additional evidence and should indeed prove the connection to Archibald Haney of 1840 Decatur Co., GA. if a match - that, in turn, should prove NAB'S connection to Archibald Haney. If not - it may shoot my whole theory!!
If you can provide an email, I'll let you know when the results are in.
