Ted....the John Haney I'm looking for was born, according to his obit, in Canada; died 1909 in Lawrence, Kans.; enlisted in the Navy out of Buffalo, Erie Co., NY and served three years on gunboat Corondalet; mar. 1st unknown; mar. 2nd Marguerite (Nero) Deno, who was from the area of St. Regis Falls, NY; John was a carpenter by trade; moved from Buffalo sometime after the C.W.; through Dakota Territory to Missiouri, finally to Kansas abt. 1885. To the best of our knowledge, he had only two children: Ida C. Haney who mar. Louis Nero; and Robert Charles Haney who mar. 1 Malvina Amulotte/Amelotte from Stuckley, Quebec, Can. Marguerite Nero was the sister of Louis Nero who mar. John's dau. Ida, so doubt very much she was the mother of the children. Notes from conversation with oldest member of the family still living (b. 1913, Lawrence and grew up around family) indicate remembrances of something to do with "Erie", but could not remember if reference was to Erie Canal, Lake Erie, Erie County.....; she also remembers an intricately detailed "table" handcrafted (she thinks) by John which resembled a "ship's wheel" or compass, with various pieces of differently colored woods inlaid in the top. Since you place your John's death in 1926, CT, I doubt we are looking for the same John....but possibly the same family???? Do you have any other information on the family of your John Haney??? Have been unable to determine "where" in Canada John was born. You may have provided a source.
