In searching for my Handyside ancestors in Edinburgh in the IGI I found the spelling HANDASYDE in Inveresk, all a bit later than your date of 1742 but with the reuse of first names I thought you might get a lead from ARCHIBALD HANDASYDE who married JANET CRAIG whose son WILLIAM was born Jan 30 1756 so could have been JANET HANDYSIDE's younger brother. I notice that your Janet twice used the name ARCHIBALD for her sons. There are several families of the various spellings of Handyside but as they didn't move around much in those days the home town is useful. I'm really only interested in the Edinburgh family and they are prolific enough to get me quite confused especially with the recycling of names, especially William and Alexander. Janet is sometimes called Jessie just to confuse you.
I suppose you know that the Edinburgh Public Records Office is now on line called Scots Origins and charges a fee for 24 hours access. Good hunting!
