Well, I've been out of the loop, genealogy research-wise, for a year or two, now... However, I still maintain the Handspiker/Hanselpacker Genealogy online at http://www.jedh.com/genealogy/hpiker.htm

I will be more than happy to offer any assistance in tracking down connections related to Handspikers and all derivative names. From research, the earliest known form of the name I've found, dates back to Johannes Henselbekker, likely the patriarch of the name on THIS side of the Atlantic. Three "brothers" (most likely): Conradt, Wilhelm and Philip, fought for the New Jersey Volunteers, during the American Revolution. Conrad and William removed to Digby, after the war, and the name changed to Handlespiker then Handspiker. Philip, seems to have left for New Brunswick, and kept the more original Hanselpacker spelling and its variants. As far as I know, my own variation, "Handspicker" didn't happen until my great-grandfather, Jeremiah, moved his family south, to Maine, USA.. and then we all scattered out from there. So, only known "c" versions are in the States and direct descendants of Jeremiah. I've still to determine, absolutely, if Henselbekker is German or Dutch in origin. There is all the patronymic naming conventions to consider, as well. For instance, COULD be, Johannes Henselbekker was the son of either a Johannes Bekker or a Hans Bekker (of which there are "examples" in that area of the colonies in the mid 1700's). The Hensel being a diminutive of Johannes or Hans... Much work still to be done. I'm just OVERJOYED that we now have a Handspiker forum!!!

Most Sincerely,

Jed
