My connection to David Handley of Jo Daviess County, Illinois is distant and collateral, but I have undertaken a little research and found the following information, which should be useful to you:

1841 Census Todmorden, Rochdale, Lancashire, England
David Handley age 30-34, Primitive Methodist Minister
Jane Handley age 30-34
John Handley age 3 months, born in County
(David and Jane born in another County)

16 May 1845 Arrival at Boston harbor
Ship St. Petersburg from Liverpool, England
David Handley 36 clergyman
Jane Handley 36
John Handley 4
Mary Jane Handley 2

1850 Census - can't find family

1860 Census Council Hill, Jo Daviess, Illinois
David Handley 41 [sic, should be 51] England Farmer
Jane Handley 41 [sic, should be 51] England
John Handley 19 England
Mary J Handley 17 England
Edward Reed 33 Engl boarder/miner [Mary's future husband]

1870 Census - can't find family

1880 Census - Hazel Green, Grant, Wisconsin
in household of Mary J Reed (her daughter)
Jane Handley 71 England Widow

I found reference to these English certificates in the Civil Registration Index (at Ancestry.com) which relate to this family, but need the actual certificates need to be ordered and analysed to be certain:

Marriage: David Handley Dec Qtr 1839 Scarborough District, Yorkshire North Riding Vol 24 Pg 505
English Marriage Indexes do not directly cross reference the spouses name, but indexed on the same page is Jane Russell. Mary Jane's daughter, Hannah has middle name Russell - so this "looks good".

(Marriage certificate should provide age, marital status, occupation, residence place and fathers' names of both parties.)

Birth: John Handley Jun Qtr 1841 Todmorden District, Lancashire Volume 21 Page 763

Birth: Mary Jane Handley Mar Qtr 1843 Pickering District, Yorkshire - North Riding Vol 24 Page 466

English birth certificates give birth date and place, parents' names, including mother's maiden name (and former married name, if applicable) and father's occupation and residence place.

English certificates can be ordered from here:
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

Because English certificates are rather pricey and this is just a distant, collateral connection for me, I probably won't be ordering the certificates myself - but, if you do, would you kindly share the results with me. Thanks.
