I have been doing a considerable amount of research on my family for some 25 years and have discovered quite a lot along the way. The earliest ancestor is a George Handford of West Anstey born approximately around 1650 and died in 1723. George had 1 surviving brother by the time he wrote his will, a William Handford who resided in Rackenford. This is where many problems lie, however, for we researchers cannot always find certain information at our fingertips. The IGI records, for example, do not show all parish records because there are none for Rackenford. And yet if you go to the church they are there in abundance. Anyway, I have proof linking me to this family of Handford's because we have an item which belonged to a Thomas Handford who owned property on the Strand in London in 1830. My main area of research revolves around James Handford born about 1800-1801 in Knowstone, Devon. I don't know for certain who his parent's are or if he had any brothers and sisters. James became a Royal Marine about 1820 and married in 1828 in Portsea, Hampshire. but the church where we assume he was christened had a large number of records destroyed from that period in a fire. I would like to know if anyone has any copies of Wills or a Family Bible that can shed any light on the matter. James had 4 Children-James William bn. 1829, Mary Ann bn. 1831, Joseph Hill bn. 1833 and George Edwin bn. 1839. This family moved around the South Molton-Wellington area quite a lot and records for any one of them from births, marriages and Deaths can be found in an area covering 20sq miles. (Before reading the Family Tree please note that due to the way spacing is reduced to a minimum in this format that I had to put the horizontal lines in as spacers, I hope that the information is clear enough, it is, unfortunately, the best I could do!)

Had to put Philips children 2 lines to fit it on and also James and Joan's children had to be moved down!
James (christened 1772)might have married Mary Hancock and/or married Betty Chilcott. His father (also James) christened in 1748 might have been widowed and married Mary Hancock. James (christened 1772) could be James Handford's (born about 1800-1801)father and Thomas who married Eliza Catherine Lloyd in 1833 passed down an item which is inscribed T.Handford, jnr 7 Strand 1830)(These are the Jursten Handford's of Somerset (James Handford married to Elizabeth Wheeler was the owner of Jursten Farm, Somerset) mentioned in Burke's Armorial with the Coat of Arms - shield Argent, two wavy bends Sable)Also, no christening dates are on the IGI for Thomas Handford and Grace Mogridges Children but they appear in Thomas' Will. Any help would be appreciated!
