Hi Tonia
Thank you so much for posting your follow up re my great grandfather, Thomas Handford. I have only just discovered it. I have not been doing any research for some time whilst renovating my house, so I must aplogise for not replying and thanking you sooner.
You have done a great job! It has taken me down a new path i.e. to Atherington and not Appledore because you are spot on. I recognise the street name and the names of two of the children - william my grandfather and George who had no children of his own. i had not heard about Bertha so will investigate this. As far as i am aware the name died out in the male line with my father's brother who also had no children.
I have a wonderful photograph of Thomas and his wife. Apparently he walked from his village to Pontarddulais, S.Wales in the parish of Llandeilo Talybont to find work in one of the tinplate factories there.
I have put off visiting Appledore for many years so perhaps at some level I knew I would have been searching in the wrong place! when my father's late brother told me last year that he had not heard Appledore mentioned only Barnstaple so it all makes sense.
You are clearly something of an expert at this research. How did you go about it?
Once again thank you so much. It is a big step forward for me.
