Hi, both of you. I have searched the 1881 census, and cannot find Handford's born in Appledore. There are, however, several born in Torrington (both Great and Little) which is in the general direction of Appledore, albeit not particularly closeby. One thing I did note, there is a HANFORD born in Bideford (which Appledore comes under) who is a prisoner in Stoke Damerel Gaol. (occupation: Lab in Foundry, Unemployed, Artizan) My Handfords are from Dulverton (on the Devon/Somerset border if you are unfamiliar with the geography of the area) but it was discovered after the death of my gg grandfather that although he'd always stressed the fact that there was a D in the name, it had, possibly in the generation before, been changed from HANFORD. Is there a possibility that this prisoner is the cause of the name change? If so, it could be likely that our branches link at some point in time. (incidentally, I too have family in Appledore at the moment stemming from my Handford line) On the point I was making to start with: There are 3 entries on a search for people born in Bideford, HANFORD, John Pris <1814> Birth: Devo Bideford Census: Devo Stoke Damerel HANDFORD, Edwin Head <1817> Birth: Devo Bideford Census: Devo Great Torrington HANDFORD, Elizabeth Head <1820> Birth: Devo Bideford Census: Devo Bideford (Although the last is a widow so would not have been born Handford.) As Thomas goes, there are: HANFORD, Thomas Head <1859> Birth: Devo Meeth Census: Devo Woodbury HANDFORD, Thomas Son <1877> Birth: Devo Atherington Census: Devo Atherington HANDFORD, Thomas Son <1880> Birth: Devo Marwood Census: Devo Marwood HANDFORD, Thomas C. Son <1880> Birth: Devo Torrington Census: Devo Great Torrington I would assume it could be one of the last 2. For geography alone, I would lean toward Thomas C. Do you have any names of his brothers/sisters or anything? As far as James Handford Lemon goes, there are 2 entries for James Lemon born Appledore: 1 father in law to Geo Court whose wife is Mary. James' wife Agnes. Living in Parracombe. 2 servant to a confectioner. The employer seems to have listed all his staff as servants, as James occupation states: journeyman confectioner. He lives in Barnstaple. If either of you want the full details for any of these entries, let me know. All the best, Tonia Notify Administrator about this message?
