Further to my previous message: I have now seen the birth certificate of Alice Mary Eliza. She was born on 18 Dec 1870 at 10 Union St Portsea, the daughter of Thomas Handford (deceased), boatswain in the Royal Navy, and Mary Alice Handford, formerly Chessell. Thomas and Mary Alice married in the 3rd quarter of 1970 in Portsea, so he died very soon after the marriage - the death presumably being recorded in the Navy deaths. Mary Alice remarried in Portsea in the 1st quarter of 1872.
