It is before this date (1734/35 -John's baptised date - HE) that the account I have compiled differs, from yours. For one thing, you show that a John Hand married an Alice Gransden in Tonbridge in 1633. However, I can categorically say that this DID NOT take place there. In fact, there are no other references to the name Hand at all in the entire registers, so clearly John Hand (Snr.) must have come from elsewhere. Regarding his birth c. 1610, in Stansted, again, I can categorically say that HE WAS NOT baptised in this place. Nor were any other children called Hand recorded in the Stansted parish records, and in fact, there is no reference at all to the name in that place in the early 1600's. Where that story of the early family came from, I do not know, but it is clearly wrong.
I decided to do my own checking first for the marriage of John Hand and Alice Gransden before 1634/5 and John Hand's birth c. 1610. As you will see, I came up with two very different possibilities to the account that you sent. The main "find" which almost fits with what you have is the marriage of John Hand and Elizabeth Gransden less than a year before John Hand was baptised in Tonbridge .... from my own marriage index which covers every known marriage in the whole of Western Kent:
John Hand married Elizabeth Gransden 24th Apr. 1634 at SUNDRIDGE
In fact, this is the ONLY "John Hand" marriage I can find in the whole of the county, and even if I had not known of the surname Gransden, I would have been assuming that this marriage is that of the parents of John, born in Tonbridge 8 months later. Sundridge is just four or five miles west of Tonbridge and this must be the marriage of John's parents. The main problem we have of course is that the name of the bride is not Alice as shown on your notes. There may be an explanation for this. First, I have not managed to check the original Sundridge registers and have so far only used a transcript at the Society of Genealogists Library. It could be therefore that the bride's name was Alice and not Elizabeth.
I note that you mention John Hand's will in which he names his wife, Alice. However, is it possible that Alice may have been a second wife (after Elizabeth had died.) Perhaps because it was known that John's wife was originally called Gransden, it has simply been mistakenly assumed that this was the Alice Gransden who was born in Tonbridge in 1613?? 1 do not know the answer to this, and as I said, it could be that Alice's name was recorded wrongly as Elizabeth either in the transcript, or even in the originals at the time. (I have come across so many errors, even in the original records, but naturally, I need to check the original marriage entry in the Sundridge register to see what it says.) Whatever the answer, I am convinced that the marriage I have found in Sundridge in April 1634 is that of the parents of John Hand, born in Tonbridge, and therefore your earliest proven ancestors.
The next stage therefore was to search the Sundridge parish register (transcript) hoping to find a baptism of a John Hand circa 1610. 1 am pleased to say that I did locate such a baptism. Once again, however, what I found does not tie in with your account of the very first character on the "tree". It could be that this family below is not the one you are looking for, but I would have to say that based on the usual research methods, one would normally assume that this baptism found in 1609 would be the same character who married 25 years later in 1634.. i.e.
4th June 1609 John, son of Steven Hand, bapt. (at Sundridge)
At first, I discounted this character, for the father's name was not John. However, on further reflection, especially when I noted that the emigrant John Hand named his second son, Stephen, and knowing just how much of the account that you sent is wrong, I thought I ought to investigate further.
There is no further mention of the name Hand in the registers after this date. (11 Dec. 1639 - Herb) Nor is there any mention of John Hand in the records after he married in 1634, presumably had one child in Tonbridge in 1635, and then left for America. His disappearance in any of the records (in Sundridge and Tonbridge) does seem to tie up with his appearance across the Atlantic, in the late 1630's.
If this John Hand is indeed your ancestor, however, it does mean that his father was STEVEN HAND and not John Hand as all your old notes imply.
If the pedigree which I have noted in Tonbridge and Sundridge is yours, it does mean of course that your earliest ancestors in Kent were actually Steven Hand and Ann Buckland, who married in 1600. (and NOT the first John Hand as shown in your notes.) As mentioned earlier, I was very interested to learn that the second son of John Hand, the emigrant was actually named Steven. John named his first son after himself (John); I believe that John might well have named his second son after his own father. It certainly seems a plausible explanation, even if it does completely re-write your family tree!

From:"A Hand Family":Some Ancestors and Descendants of Lemuel Hand, 1725-1802 ----------by Harriet Woodbury Hodge, C.G.Library of Congress Catalog Card Number:81-82589
THE EARLY HAND FAMILY JOHN 1HAND, born about 1611 in England, died in I600 at East Hampton, Long island, New YORK. came to America bdween 1636 and I640.
He married, about 1633 in England, ALICE GRANSDEN, baptized 28 November 1613 at Tonbridge, Co. Kent, the daughter of Henry Gransden and his wife, Alice (Harris) Hatcher, who were married 12 June 1609. Henry Gransden was the son of William and Ann Gransden. Henrys wife, Alice, was the daughter of Nicholas and Alice (Thatcher) Harris and the widow of Walter Hatcher. After the death of John Hand, Alice (Gransden) Hand married secondly, before 1663, Captain Edward Codner of Saybrook, Connecticut. Capt. Codner died before 22 October 1670, the date of the inventory of his estate. (Mrs. Codner is not known to have married again. The Alice Hand who marned William Shipman 26 November 1690 at Saybrook, Connecticut was undoubtedly a granddaughter).
For many year's genealogists believed effineously that Alice, wife of John Hand, was a sister of Josiah Stanborough of Southampton, New York, based on the following records: In East Hampton Town records, dated 26 November 1657, there is a deposition of John Hand that he "heard my Brother Stanborogh say, and of "the wife of John Hand" that "she heard her brother Stanborrougb say, " and of John Hand, Jr. regarding his Uncle Stanborough. Actually, Josiah Stanborough was a brother-in-law, for research in England has shown that John Hand married Alice Gransden about 1633 and her sister, Frances Gransden married Josiah Stanborough, as his first wife, in 1636. The 1621will of Henry Gransden, father of Alice and Frances, as well as the 1615 will of their grandfather, Nicholas Harris, show that the Gransden. girls and their sisters were heiresses to land in Stansted, Tonbridge, Wrotharn and Asshe in Co. Kent. The lands were referred to in East Hampton records as follows:
1. A receipt of 24 April 1660 from John Hand to "my Brother Josiah Stanborougli" for'ye some of 50 L toward or in part payment of my part of the land at Stanstede wch he sould for mee to Bozine Allen of Boston, " .
2. In an areement between John Hand, (Jr.), late of East Hampton Long Island and his "mother Alice Codner" dated 7 December 1663, lands at Trumbridge and Ashford in Rootam in the County of Kent" are mentioned. These were certainly the lands in Tombridge and Wrotham, the inheritaiice of Alice (Gransden) (Hand) Codner.
The 1950-55 research in England ID & El concerning John Hands wife, Alice Gransden, has raised questions concerning the origin of John Hand. It is usually stated that he was born in 1611 at Stantsted, Kent. Genevieve Tylee Kiepura, who commissioned the English research on the Gransden antecedents, was tracing a Hand line and wrote the 1950 and 1956 articles in The American Genealogist-on the Gransden family. Parish records of Stansted, Toribridge, Wrotham, East Peckham, Gravesend and Milton -next -Gravesend in Kent were searched, producing Gransden, Harris, Thatcher and Hatcher records, but nothing is shown for the surname "Hand" except the baptism of John (2) Hand, son of John, at Tonbridge, 29 January 1634 (1633/4). It seems possible that John(l) Hand was born in another county and lived at Tonbridge, Kent, only after his marriage. The lands in Kent were clearly the property of John's wife, Alice (Gransden) Hand.
Descendants of John (1) Hand believed that his father came to America with him, returned to England to claim some property, and was murdered on the high seas. No record found so far substantiates this oft-repeated tale, etc. This compiler, in the course of research, has seen a number of accounts of the origin of John (1) Hand, but none of them are based on genuine probate, land or patrish records in England, with proven connections to the American Immigrant. . Modem genealogists mistrust unsupported ancestral claims and as yet the parentage, birth date and birth place of John (1) Hand are not known to me.
John (1) certainly lived at Tonbridge, Co. Kent, England in 1634 and was in that county as late as 20 September 1636, when his wife, Alice Hand alias Gransden, was granted administration as next of kin on the estate of her cousin, James Gransden. Josiah Stanborough and Frances Gransden were married in England in 1636, the same year, so both families emigrated to America after 1636, probably before 1640. John Hand may have been briefly at Lynn, Mssachusetts, although there is no record of his name in that town. Or he may have been early in CannecticuL. By 1644 he was at Southampton, Long Island, New York. In 1647 it was called "of the Isle of Wight, (now Gardiners Island, N.Y. in the Milford, Connecticut baptismal record of his son, James M and by 1649 he was in East Hampton, New York, where he was one of the founders. With Thomas Backer, he was appointed to "go vnto, Keniticur for to bring vs vnder their govemment, " on 19 March 1657/9. A compect between East Hampton and Connecticut Colony was signed 3 May 1658 by John Hand and Thomas Backer. John Hand was a magistrate at East Hampton 1657-1660.
He died before 24 January 1660/1, the date the inventory of his estate was presented at East Hampton. John Hand's will mentions his wife (not named), four children, John, Stephen, Joseph and Mary, and five younger unnamed children to be provided for by his wife, from what he leaves her: 1781.
There are a number of genealogies for branches of John (1) Hand's family. All of them agree on at least the names of most of his children, but vary widely in the identities of their spouses and offspring.None are conpletly reliable. Some valid corrections, were unknown to early compilers and are often overlooked today. Part of the problem is that no early vital statistics were recorded in East Hampton and the church records began only with the ministry of Rev. Nathaniel Huntting in 1696. The published town records of East Hampton, and probate record, are useful, but leave genealogical puzzles, To Illustrate, Mary Talmage, daughter of Capt. Thomas (2) Talmage and his wife Elizabeth Bancroft, called "Mary Hand" in her father's 1687 will, was of the generation to be the wife of a son of John (1) Hand, But did she marry Shamgar (2), James 2, or Thomas 2), all of whom had wives in 1687 whose names are unknown? Mary (Talmage) Hand must be omitted from this compilation, awaiting further identification. Conversely, Stephen (2) Hand had to known wives 1) Sarah Stratton and 2) Rebecca Bushnell. Confusion arises from the fact that the sister of wife #1, Rebecca Stratton, married the brother of wife #2, William Bushnell, Jr. Rebecca (Stratton) Bushnell was never a widow her husband outlived her, but the myth persists that Stephen Hand married sisters. Not so! he married his first wife's sister's husbands sister!

Reading through the following Publications, I find all of them uses John's birth date of 1611.
East Hampton History including Genealogies of Early Families by Jeannette Edwards Rattrap.
Profiles of the Early Settlers of the Town of East Hampton, vol II, as prepared and compiled by Purcell B. Robertson, dated May 1979.

A Hand Family, some Ancestors and Descendant of Lemuel Hand 1725-1802 and his wife Hannah Thomas, 1728-ca.1818 of Connecticut and New York', by Harriet Woodbury Hodge, C.G..
The b: date 1611, seems to come from information I have read in the "Descendants of Unknown Hand," where Steven Hand (b: ca 1580) and John Hand (b: 1570) were brothers. Both who have a son John, born in Stanstede parish Kent Co., England.
No where, have I been able to find where a John Hand came from London, nor where ANY Hand came to, or was born in County Kent, England, who was the father of Steven and John. Therefore, I must use the letter of Sydney Smith to base my "version of the Hand Family" on. I feel more information will come from a source other than what I have found, but until it is shown or proven to me, I must go with the facts I have.
I believe there are other researchers from, or in England, who have more information that will substantiate what I have written. Reread the above paragraph where Genevieve Kylee Kiepura commissioned the English researcher on the Gransden antecedents. She was tracing a Hand lineage and wrote the 1950 and 1955 articles in The American Genealogist on the Gransden family.
English researcher Sydney Smith has shown that the birth of John, son of Steven, was baptized in 1609.His birth-date would have to be 1609 or before. - Herb

Lois at the Cape May Historical Society sent the following newspaper article to be read at the Texas Hand Cousins reunion:
Cape May Newspaper, The Wave, Saturday,October 26, 1895
One history of the Hand family states that a colony of Puritans came from Maidstone, Kent County, England about the year 1648 (it may have beena few years earlier.)
They first landed at Lynn, Mass. but not liking that region they finally selected the east end of Long Island for a settlement. The land was bought of the Shinuicock Indians for 80 Pounds and paid for in blankets, powder, shot and cloth.
They divided their purchase, settled a pastor and established schools. In all of these transactions the name of John Hand appreared as a first settler and also as a select man of the town.
John mentions eight children in his will made in 1660-Joseph, Shamgaff Benjamin, Stephen, John, James, Thomas and Mary. Tradition has most of them settling at Cape May, N. J.
Previous to emigrating John was a freeholder of his county of Kent in England. This account places him at East Hampton, L.I., where he was one of the patentees of the original purchase. He died in 1660 leaving seven or more sons who founded families on Long Island, Connecticut and Now Jersey.
From a passenger list of a vessel sailing for America's the name of John Hand appears as early as 1635 with those of Mark Hand, Milford Hand and Richard Hand, whose histories have been lost.
In 1657 mention is made of John Hand being one of three select men who were sent to Hartford, Conn., to obtain a code of laws.
In 1669 Stephen Hand is mentioned as one of the overseers of the colony. In the assessment for East Hampton in 1675 these names are recorded with the valuation of property owned by each:
Thomas Hand 97 Pounds
Benjamin Hand 11 Pounds
James Hand 58 Pounds
Stephen Hand 174 Pounds
Shamgar Hand 121 Pounds
The records of East Hampton show that in 1659 John Hand was one of the men before whom legal proceedings were conducted. A receipt he gave to Josiah Stanborough, bearing date of February 18, 1657, he preserved as follows:
Memorandum that John Hand do fully acquit Josiah Stanbourough for a dues, debts and demands whatsoever about from the beginning of the world unto this day for any cause or reason whatsoever. Witness my Hand." John Hand
It seems well-established that John Hand, 1611-1660 was the founder 4 the many Hands of that name and whose numerous progeny comprise some early settlers of New Jersey, New York and Connecticut.
Shamgar and his family, with his brothers and their families were at Cape May before the close of the 17th century.
A second coat of arms is on record with inscription as follows,"Nec de it operi dextra," (This hand shall not be wanting to his work.) It was obtained from a public library In London by a member of the family and very ancient.

John sold his East Hampton lands to Richard Smith of Southampton on 23 November 1663, [G-1-206] and soon after "lately of East Hampton" made the agreement with his mother, Alice Codner, cited on the previous page. He seems to have been in East Hampton I July 1668 [G-1:2841 with an entry in the town records beginning "Steven Hand sold unto his Brother John Hand one gray horse. :1 proceeding with the earmarks and brands for this horse and six others belonging to the "said John. There are no other records for John Hand at East Hampton, and one wonders if the clerk ascribed the ownership of the horses to the wrong brother of Stephen Hand. There apparently are no records that John (2) Hand ever was in New Jersey or Connecticut [D], and no evidence that he ever married.

On Nov. 3, 1668, he granted the Town of E.H. leave to put a highway through his woodland, 12 feet wide, "only to drive carts and oxen in yoake & to ride & lead a horse through; not to drive cattle through out of yoake".
Stephen 2 was Constable 1674 and 1680 and in 1683 was chosen one of a committee to join Southampton in selecting a representative for the First Colonial Assembly under Governor Dongan.

A HAND FAMILY - by Harriet Woodbury Hodge, C.G.Library of Congress Catalog Card Number:81-82589
Stephen Hand's will, written 17 May 1688 and probated 2 May 1693, mentions his wife (unnamed), sons Stephen (eldest), Joseph (living, but apparently not at East Hampton in 1688), and Samuel (youngest) to have the homestead after wife's decease or remarriage: and five unnamed daus, all under age eighteen. Widow Rebecca Hand, administratrix in 1693, [VV-pp. 76-781. Children by first wife Sarah- 1) STEPHEN, b. abt. 1661; 2) JOSPEH, b. abt. 1664; By second wife Rebecca3) SAMUEL, b. abt. 1667; 4)probably ALICE, m. 26 Nov. 1690 at Saybrook, CT, M, WILLIAM SHIPMAN; 5) REBECCA, m. 20 July 1694 at Guilford, CT M, JOHN MEIGS; 6) ABIGAIL, of Guilford, CT, "daughter of Stephen" m. When reading the articles about the Hand Family from two genealogists, the information becomes somewhat cloudy. One states that Steven's first wife Sarah d; "by 1684", while the other states her death being abt. 1664-65.I followed the lead from A HAND FAMILY who used Stephen's will as her reference. - Herb
I also have a question about Alice b: Jan 2, 1669/70 and Elizabeth b: Jan 27, 1671 because these same girls are also born to Benjamin (brother of Stephen) on the same dates. It is possible, but not probable. I left the girls listed under both for the time being, but think they are probably Benjamin's children. - Herb

------------------------------------------
JAMES HAND, son of John and Alice (Gransden) Hand, baptized 1647 at Milford, Connecticut, [VI, by Rev. Peter Prudden, "son of John Hand of the Isle of Wight, brought up by Brother Brooks."The "Isle of Wight" is now Gardiner's Island, northeast of Long Island, New York. A William Brooks was living at Milford in 1647 and a Richard Brooks was an early settler of East Hampton, Now York, but whether either of these was the "Brother Brooks" who brought up James Hand is unknown. James Hand, Sr. died at East Hampton 13 November 1733, "aged about 82 years, but he would seem to have been at least 86, from the baptismal record.
Other children ascribed to James (2) Hand are Mary, Rebecca and Jonathan. "Mary, bp. 1700," appears as James' child in Howell's History of Southampton, [B], but this is a misnomer for Esther, who is omitted by Howell. There is a baptismal record in 1700 for Esther, none for a Mary. Rebecca may well be confused with the daughter of James Hand, Jr. Too little is known about Jonathan for this compiler to form an opinion.

On 28 June 1766, Elias Hand of East Hampton, yeoman, sold to Jeremiah Osborn of same, tanner, "all my rights in Montauk, etc. " [Ibid. 4:213).
