Have located the death record of my gr-grandfather Robert CARTER who died in Chatham County, GA on 11-25-1921. The record shows his father as unknown, but his mother as Mary HANCOCK.
Our records show he was a son of Benjamin CARTER and Mary TILLMAN. Benjamin was captured in the Civil War in 1862 at Ft. Pulaski outside of Savannah and died in a Union prison in VA. His wife Mary applied for a pension in 1863. She is in the census in 1870 with her children Robert, Daniel, and Benjamin. After that, we don't know.
Could it be possible she remarried a HANCOCK in Chatham County after 1870? Our CARTER lines cross with James H. HANCOCK (abt 1842 to bef 1910) and Josephine (unknown), he a son of Phillip HANCOCK & Christy (unknown).
