Looking for information on Joseph Alexander Hampton and Jane Desart this is all I have so far..... Joseph Alexander Hampton was born in 1835 in East Fork Twsp, Illinois. He received his early education in an old log school house near his home, which was one of the pioneer structures of the community. There were no glass windows but a log had been removed from one side of the build- ing and covered with greased paper, so that light was admitted to the room in that way. There was a "stick chimney" and all the furnishings were of the most primitive character. In this rude log structure Alex laid the foundations for a good practical knowledge and a useful life. At 21 years of age, he was licensed to preach and became a local minister. He preached locally for 10 years when he was admitted to the Southern Conference and for 30 years he continued to preach. Alex, in the early part of the Civil War, enlisted and was a member of Co.B 117th Ill. Inf., as was his brother James. He participated in the Red River Campaign and was at the battle of Nashville. He was also in the fighting at Mobile near the close of the War. Although frequently exposed to the bullets of the enemy he was never wounded. He was, however, in the hospital because of illness during the last year of his service and 1865 he was mustered out. Alex cast his first vote for John C. Fremont for president and was a republican up to the time he joined the prohibition party and was an ardent worker in its ranks. He was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic and at one time belonged to the Masonic Fraternity. Alex married Jane DeSart in Montgomery County and to this union were born eight children. Alex and his wife lived earnest, consistent Christian lives and they have been the means of doing much good. Alex and Jane are buried in MT. Pleasant (Tic key Point).
