Many of us have long known that Andrew Hampton of Granville, NC moved to GA circa 1765. Many of us have also suspected that some of the early GA Hamptons were possibly his descendants. Recent dna results indicate that may well be the case. We know that in the 1762 Granville County, North Carolina Tithe List of Robert Harris list for this year contains the names, separately listed, of "Ephraim Hampton", "Andrew Hampton son John and Joseph" and "Ezekiel Hampton." We also know that an Andrew, Joseph and John Hampton are listed in the early St. George Parrish Ga. Records ( 1760s). Joseph and John ask for land adjoining Hall Hudson, Asa Emanuel and David Lewis, each receiving land next to each. We know that in deeds of sale for his last Granville, NC land, Andrew Hampton is noted as "being in the Province of Georgia." Other deeds indicate that Joseph King, Andrew's son-in-law went to Georgia at the same time (circa 1765). Granville, NC Deeds H-279 and H-476 (1765) show both Andrew Hampton and Joseph King "in the Province of GA." We know that Andrew Hampton may have a son named Joseph, from the Granville tax list. A Joseph Hampton (apparent possible son of son of Andrew) would have been born born circa 1746 in NC since he first shows up on the 1762 tax list (Tax list in Granville NC 1762 -16= 1746), and that Andrew died circa 1803 in Jefferson County, Georgia. He married Elizabeth unknown. This Joseph apparently moved to Georgia as he shows up in land records in 1769 and later appears in the 1801 Tax Digest of Jefferson County, Georgia with one slave, and 200 acres. We have found that Andrew Hampton was in GA with two minor children: In 1769, Andrew Hampton applied for a land grant in Georgia along the Altamaha River, stating “he had lived in Georgia for four years along with his wife and two minor children (Georgia Headright Grants Book F.5, pages 470, 473)” Source: JW Foster. Now we have James Hampton that traces his ancestry as follows: James CARTER EUGENE CARTER EUGENESR JOHN MILLEDGE JR JOHN MILLEDGE SR Andrew Joseph Andrew James Hampton’s dna results (above James Hampton) matches that of Karl Hampton and several other NJ Hamptons including that of two descendants of Ezekiel Hampton, son of Andrew Hampton of Granville, NC. The most recent common ancestor is estimated at 6 to 10 generations. Anyone have any information on this line of Hamptons that would help prove or disprove this relationship? Any information and thoughts are welcome. I also would like to make a request for any male Hamptons to submit dna, more samples will help us and others to follow to sort out and better identify various Hamptons.
