Hello,
I am helping a relative with their HAMPSON family. Edward HAMPSTON was bapt. May 1825 at Saint Michael's, Ashton Under Lyne, Lancashire. His parents were Thomas and Nancy HAMPSON. Edward married Eliza HARRISON bapt. May, 1824 also at Saint Michael's, Ashton Under Lyne. She was the daughter of James and Alice Harrison.

Edward HAMPSON married Eliza HARRISON at Manchester Cathedral, Lancashire on 1st January 1844. Sometime between 1844 and 1848 the couple immigrated to the USA, where Wright Harrison HAMPSON was born in Salem, Mass in 1848, Desdemona Ann HAMPSON was born 1851 in Newark, New Jersey and Alice Maria HAMPSON was born 1853 in Boston, Mass. Between July 1853 and before the birth of their son Thomas, in Australia in 1854, the family sailed from Boston to Old Sydney Town, Australia. What ship they sailed on is at the moment unknown.

Does anyone know any history of this family while they were in the United States. Did Edward go there because relatives were already there. The year the family sailed to Australia was when the great gold rush was talking place to Bendigo and Ballarat in Victoria.

However, this family chose to settle on the middle North Coast of New South Wales, where Edward became a police constable. Five children were born in the Colony of New South Wales, Thomas, William, Edward, Henry and Mary Amelia. Sadly, Edward was killed in 1868 not long after the death of his 14 year old son Thomas. Edward was thrown from his horse with force against a tree.

Regards,
Janice
