Two Hampel brothers settled in Jefferson County, MO just prior to the 1840 Census - Jacob and Peter Hampel with their families. I am descended from Peter Hampel, and my research has focused on his descendants. It is very confusing attempting to sort out the descendants of Peter and Jacob because each generation in both lines named their sons Peter and Jacob. The family was Catholic. Most of the records are at Immaculate Conception Church in Arnold, Mo. or St. Boniface Church in South St. Louis. (These records are available through the Family History Library) Jacob Hampel sold the land to the Archdiocese of St. Louis for the Immaculate Conception Church. In the early Jefferson County records the name is spelled Hambel and Humble. Jacob's wife, Margaret, is listed in the 1850 Mortality Census of Jefferson County.
