Have you seen the following file at rootsweb.com?
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:2462825&id=I520886541
This person claims to have your Hammond family traced back to 1600s Anne Arundel, MD, and then on to 1500s England. However, the lack of details given for William Cicero Hammond raises some doubts about the pedigree in the above link. Do you have any further details about William Cicero Hammond? The above pedigree could also be supported or disproven by you taking a simple Y-DNA test--let me know if you'd like some details about that method.
I'm interested in your Hammond family because the first name of Valentine was quite common and unique to my Hamman/Hammond clan back in the 1800s; furthermore, we have a large branch that settled in Georgia in the late 1700s.
