Betty Meischen of Bellville, Texas has just had her book published entitled From Jamestown to Texas. The book is the first one of a planned series pertaining to the history of many of the pioneer families of Austin County. Beginning in the year 1821, From Jamestown to Texas chronicles the stories and roots of many families from this area whose members helped to carve the Great State of Texas out of a virgin wilderness. Most members of these early settlers fought either at the Alamo or at San Jacinto. Nearly all of these families had members who generations before had participated in other great battles such as that of King's Mountain, the Battle of Cowpens, and Guilford Courthouse during the American Revolution. Others were at Appomattox Courthouse for the surrender of Lee to Grant ending the Civil War. The histories go back in time, tracing the parallel families of William Barret Travis, Davy Crockett, Sam Houston, Andrew Jackson, and Daniel Boone. These families intermarried with many of the Austin County families depicted in the book. For many, the trail eventually leads back to the early 1600?s and the very cradle of American civilization in Jamestown, Virginia. The stories are traced even further back to the blue blood and royalty of Europe. The families originate in Scotland, Ireland, England, France, and Germany. One family has been traced all the way back to King Alpin of Scotland in 894.

The companion novel Trails West, which is in the publishing process and will be coming out shortly, is based on the actual facts depicted in From Jamestown to Texas. Because the tales of these original pioneers encompass so much history, Trails West is being published in multiple books in the form of novelettes. Book I, Tejas, The Promised Land which covers the period 1821-1826 will be out in time for Christmas, followed a month later by Book II, The Trail to San Jacinto. Book II tells the story of the dedicated brave men and women who fought the battle for Texas' independence. Book III Lone Star: The Republic should come out in about 4-6 months. If you enjoyed Lonesome Dove and the TV series Little House on the Prairie, then these novels about local Austin County families and their struggles and hardships during the colonial period of Texas will keep your attention. The Trails West series follows the same basic group of families as they settle the new frontier of Texas. There are also stories woven in about the Indian wars, slavery, and the Black Americans. The novels are filled with echoes of the events portrayed in The Alamo, Braveheart, The Patriot and Gone with the Wind.
The following is the publisher's critique of From Jamestown to Texas: The concept and story line is delivered clearly and effectively. From Jamestown to Texas is a comprehensive account that traces the history of the early pioneer families of Austin County Texas. The author chronicles their westward movement to the Promised Land'their journey to the American frontier. Good work. The author's tone and writing style is clear and direct. The manuscript is presented in a logical and sequential order that kept my attention throughout. The transition from chapter to chapter worked quite well. The author does a fine job introducing the material and purpose of the book. I can't think of a better way to present the material.
"I think the manuscript will appeal to a large audience of readers, both young and old. This is an established writer that has done her homework. The author has documented numerous families that made Austin county home-giving us their journey and story. These are well-documented facts that should be required reading at schools near and around Austin County. One can only hope that there's someone like Meischen in our own hometown to research and record family history. I applaud the author for her countless hours of research. I would encourage the author to continue on with the series. Now that we have a lot of the facts I would like to hear more abut the stories that surround these families. Keep up the good work.
