For some reason, there has been a lot of confusion over the identity of the father of Lewis Hammack b. ca 1775 in Va m. Elizabeth Harvey. The answer was under everyone's nose: his father was Lewis Hammack b. 17 June 1749.
Here's the proof:
1) The 2 Lewises lived close to each other in Franklin Co, Va in 1810 where the older Lewis Hammack was listed as "Sr."
2) A detailed 1810-1820 census comparison proved that the two Lewises in Franklin, Va were the same men who moved to Warren, Tn ca 1812.
3) Thus, the two men shared the same migration path from Franklin, Va to Warren, Tn
4) The John Kersey living next door to Lewis Sr. in Franklin, Va was living close by in Warren, Tn. Kersey names pop up on multiple Hammack deeds. I suspect one of the Hammack girls married a Kersey boy.
5) Lewis Sr.'s daughter Winney married a Swinney in Franklin Co., TN before migrating to Warren.
6) Winney and Lewis Jr. migrated together from Franklin, Va to Warren, Tn to Carroll Co., Tn
7) In Carroll Co, two of Lewis Jr.’s sons-in-law (Culver and Baxter) witnessed an indenture for Winney.
8) Lewis Jr. named a daughter “Winniford.”
Although I was confidant that the above more than met the genealogical proof standard, I decided to see what else I could dig up. Thanks to the will of William Harvey, it’s long been known that his daughter Elizabeth married Lewis Hammack Jr. about 1797-1798 in Campbell or Charlotte Co, Va. William Harvey’s land on Cub Creek was predominantly in Campbell but spilled over the border into Charlotte. I discovered that, in 1796, Lewis Hammack purchased 447 acres near Cub Creek in Charlotte.
Next, I determined that John Kersey was in Charlotte by the 1780s as was Lewis Hammack Sr. John Kersey married a Hazlewood. Lewis Sr. had a son named “Thomas” who married a Hazlewood.
I have quite a bit of additional information is anyone has questions.
