New Hammock info from new poster
Might I add to this trail.I found US immigration records from the 1600's in the geneology library in Canton Ohio about 15 years ago.I originally looked at the records from the 1900's, 1800's and found nothing, then looked at the 1700's and saw one entry where a Hammock left Virginia and went to New York.I spoke with the librarian about the name and he showed me a book from the 1600's in where I found a Hammock that had immigrated to Virginia in 1628 from on a ship from London, if I remember. I am in the middle of relocating to Minnesota, so my records are packed.Anyhow, once I complete my move, I will provide details, but I have the name of the ship, the captain's name. That Hammock had an occupation listed as a cutler (knife and sword maker).Last year, I found a copy of a will from a Hammock in Virginia on the internet that was found by someone attending Oxford University dated around 1700.He also found court documents where this Hammock was involved in law suits, one of which was where another land lord had gotten his indentured servant pregnant before her term of service was finished and the land lord was forced to pay him 2000 lbs of tobacco for the inconvience and care of the "bastard" child. It is riviting in that there is a sworn statement from the local minister attesting to the confession of the "crime" by the man.THere is another case where the Hammock listed, sued another man and his wife for slandering the good name of the Mrs. Hammock and won. THe last will and testament is written in the old English style of the King James Bible and is marvelous to read.I will post all of these once I get settled as I just discovered this forum and I have much more that I have found through the years. My line of Hammocks are in Ohio and I have yet to trace them any further back than my grandfather.I have had better luck searching down the line than up.
