I would like to help you on why the name change. The German pronunciation of Ham, Hamm and Hamme is Haum not ham as a "ham" sandwich. As "A" in German is pronounced "ah". I have found this out after wondering why the name Hamm was changed to Humm when Hamm's migrated to MD from PA. It was an Americanization sounding of the name.
