I do not know much about Lamech Hamlett. However, in my research, I traced my family back to Morris Hamlett of Charlotte County, VA, who died in 1780. In his will he mentioned 8 children, one of whom was Abner. I believe that Abner was adopted and cared for by another family--although I do not have my notes in front of me at this time. We could not find a record of what happened to Abner, though, so his going to Canada would solve that mystery.
Since you knew that Morris was Abner's father, do you have any idea who his mother was? We have searched many counties in Virginia and some in North Carolina looking for a marriage license or the name of a spouse and have found no concrete evidence. One of Morris' older sons was named William Porter Hamlett, so some think that Mary Porter of Hanover (or Henrico) could possibly have been his wife- or one of them. Another theory is that he was married to a Cherokee Indian. I hasten to add that he did have a daughter named Tillathatemy--which lends a little credence to that thought.
Our search lets us know that he bought property in Pittsylvania County in 1779, made a will, and died in 1780. We have been unable to ascertain where he was buried or what happened to his land. Taxes were paid under his name for several years under his name as deceased. Perhaps the land was sold for taxes. We just do not know.
Perhaps we can share information and know a little more than we do at present. I would appreciate anything you have on Abner and his family and descendants.
Thanks! Ellen Hamlett Stewart (Morris would have been my
