After suffering fro eleven weeks from Brights diseas, Elwood A. Hamilton, know far and wide among his friends as "Al", died at the home of his daughter, Mrs Fillmore Smiley, Nields street, at 1:30 o'clock this morning. He was seventy-one years old.

He was born in Norristown, Montgomery County, and during the Civil War he served five years in the Union Army, being a member of the 51st Pennsylvania Volunteers, and after the term of his service there had expired he enlisted in the Seventh U.S. Calvary, in which he spent five years, most of the time being in the West, where he saw many Indian fights in the Colonel Custer country. In the Civil War he was one of five soldiers detailed to guard a home in Kentucky, which proved to be that of his present pastor, Rev. S. B. Spalding, D.D., rector of St. Agnes' Catholic Church.

In addition to his army duty he also was for a time in the U.S. Navy, making his whole term thirteen years in the service of the United States.

For thirty-two years he was foreman of the roundhouse of the Pennsylvania Railroad, where he remained until he retired on age, October 25, 1915. He was succeeded by his son, Alfred, who has since died, and now the place is filled by Arthur Miller.

He was a member of St. Agnes' Catholic Church. He married Miss Ann Doan, who was his faithful companion until her death on January 29, 1915. Two sons, John W. and Lawrence J. Hamilton, survive him, and the daughters of Mrs. Smiley, with whom he made his home.
