Jean,

I'm not sure whether I can help much but here are some possibilities (I was very fortunate that the Hemers owned a small shipyard as the name of the business and location helped a lot):

1. Try the poll books and directories- they tend to be alphabetical and then have trade/business name
2. Liverpool had a number of different areas- can you figure out through censuses etc which docks your gg grandfather worked at (mine were in Bootle which narrowed things down)
3. If you have any luck with figuring out the name of a business one of my Hemer relations has managed to trace a list of the ships that the Hemers built so you may be able to do the same and I'll ask her how she got the info.
4. The large dockyards did keep records especially later in the century when many were naval ones- and you can get access at the PRO in Kew.

good luck

Kate
