Ian,
Good to hear from you.I meant to add that I live in Ormiston, Brisbane, Australia.Yes, I do have Geoffrey Hamer's book, History of Hamer.I wrote to him some years back.Unfortunately he wasn't able to 'place' my William Hamer b. Bury c. 1780/90s, but did tell me about the Will of John Hamer of Longfield who had sons William and James.(See his book P.86.)I did apply for a copy of this Will but although William and James were witnesses to the Will, I still don't have "proof" that this is my family.I would certainly like to think so.John's wife was Mary.Going by the naming pattern, John, son of William born Bury, named his first dau. Elizabeth after his mother Elizabeth Peers, 2nd dau. after his wife's mother, Sarah Kinsey, and 3rd dau. was always known as Mary Alice. So parents of my William, would appear to be John and Mary Hamer. Alice could be g. grandmother. In Eliz. Peers sister's Will, my John was the Executor of the Will and it only mentions a sister called Mary, no brother James...he may have died by then...1858. The connection with Salford also strengthens the theory. The family bible shows that William was a Wheelwright as was John b. 1822,(continued this occupation after arrival in Oz.) but the Will says William and his bro. James were weavers.John of Longfield left his goods and chattels etc. to his wife Mary however William and James Signatures appear on the Will. There is no mention of any other sons or dau. Mary. Geoff Hamer mentions "several sons".It is possible that I've have my family history all this time!Maybe you are a better detective than I am, Ian!Thanks for your help. Will re-read the Will and Geoffrey Hamer's book again carefully. Is Paul Hamer Geoffrey's son?
Best wishes,
Roslyn
