My Hamer line came from Poland to Barcelona to America about 1850. Have not confirmed this, but it is what my great aunt insists. They were Jews and I think the original name may have sounded like Emer or Amer or Hamer.

Great great grandfather was Noah Hamer; great grandfather was Aryeah Hamer.

Noah reportedly died shortly after coming to America.
Aryeah changed his name to Louis (both names mean Lion) Harrison. I haven't a clue where he got Harrison, but that is the name he signed on his marriage contract, which lists him as Aryeah, son of Noah Hamer. This was in 1874 in Florence, SC.

Because there is a large family by the name of Hamer in that area, I thought they might have picked that up there.

Who knows? As you said: What a mess!!
