Hi,
I agree with you on William Haltom #2, the one who purchased land in Anson Co. 1772 as William Haltom Jr., as being the most likely choice as the father of Oran William Haltom b.1792.Problem is, I didn't come to that conclusion until a day after I made this post. What changed my mind was a letter from one Haltom researcher to another in 1970 that related a story about Oran's father living in Mississippi ca.1830's.This eliminated William Haltom1764-1859 once and for all because he lived in Owen Co. In. 1827-59.That does leave only WIlliam who was in Tenn., 1830, so we're in agreement.

All of this is pure speculation based on the use of "Jr.", "Sr.", when they purchased land and showed up in Anson Co. N.C.Here are some reasons why I'm theorizing date ranges of birth for certain individuals.
*
1. There was only one William Haltom mentioned in the Cecil Co. Md. records I found, being the son of John Haltham who left his will in Cecil Co. Md. 1728.What tells me he was an adult at that time was that in 1729, an estate was administered in Cecil Co. where hundreds of people were owed money from. One of them was William Haltham. He must have been born before 1708 or so.
2. The first purchase of land in Anson Co. N.C. was in 1754 by William Haltom or some variant of that spelling. On June 2, 1750 a William Hallams witnessed a deed there also. He's mentioned as having several children in the 1753-56 era in Moravian church records in North Carolina because he took refuge from the Indians there. Those notations are posted on the Altom Site maintained by Linda (Altom) Smith.

Md., May, 1761. Since he's eliminated from being a son of John Haltham d.1728, he is more likely a son of William Haltom who shows up in Anson Co. with several children and at least 1 son, in 1750.I'm speculating that if William Haltom Sr. was born before 1708, then his son John, who buys his first land in 1761, would have been born about 1730-40, but closer to 1740 since he didn't buy land before 1761.

William Haltom Jr. who buys his first land in 1772 in Anson Co. and is still a Jr. in the 1782 Tax list of Montgomery Co. N.C., is likewise, speculated as being born ca.1745/50.I'm also speculating he was born in Cecil Co. Md. since that is where the family likely was in the 1740's.If I said he was a son of John that was confusion on my part.I think he is the son of William Haltom Sr., born before 1708.
