This was a WONDERFUL read, it provided some more details of the incident, and his reaction. I do believe that his son, William Jr. (who also disappears on the Hallum descendents tree) "became" William (Wheelright) Hellums, and possibly started listing John William as his father, to further mask his identity. Moving up my family tree, William Hellums is where everything virtually "disappears." There are documents that show he may also have used Hellems and Hollems. All of this happens virtually in the same county (Old 96 District) in SC, where the Hallam families had two 500 acre land grants. A good place to "disappear."
