Hello thought I would throw my two cents worth in. Benjamin Hallowell inherited an Estate in Surrey known as Beddington Park from his sister who had married a Carew. The sizeable amount and estate were willed to him on the condition he take the name Carew and append it. His children as stated took both also.
The Hallowells from the UK then are at best relatives of his whereas the New England Hallowells are more closely related. His sister did marry Samuel Vaughn, Benjamins brother Ward oddly enough did the same thing. He took the name of a favourite uncle as part of the terms of inheritance and he became Ward Nicholas Boylston yep of Boylston hall fame in Boston.
I have written the greater part of a book which started out as a brief exploration of the Admiral (who incidentally insisted he was Canadian all his life) and it turned into a major Micheneresque monster! The one thing that holds me up is some definitive knowledge of where he was born. Some say Windsor Nova Scotia 1760 others say Boston 1761. Until it is resolved the book remains parked.
The Admirals father also Benjamin btw is buried in Toronto then known as York Upper Canada. His daughter (another of Admirals sister) married the first chief justice of Upper Canada John Elmsly .
