I, and many others, have been researching the origins of Nathan Hallet for a number of years without much success. All we know is that he was born in 1750, perhaps in New York, and died in Steuben Co., NY in July, 1820. Recently I came actoss some interesting information: An article in the Boston Columbian Centenial newspaper dated, 15 July 1820, states in a column entitled "Crime, Punishments, Etc," that Nathan Hallet, Esq. of Steuben County, New York, died a suicide by "twisting a pine shrub round his neck to strangulation." This is a variation on different stories I have heard describing his death as the result of typhoid fever induced lunacy, where he became lost and strangled to death when entangled in a grape arbor. The fact that this event was reported in a Boston newspaper may or may not have any significance. That is, was Hallet a person of interest to Boston area readers or was it the unusual nature of his death that caused the newspaper to print the death notice? We still do not know if Nathan Hallet came from the Long Island, New York Hallets at Newtown, or the Barnstable Co., Massacheusetts Hallets, or from somewhere in England. I am personally inclined to believe he was born in Westchester County, NY, but there is no proof. Any one have anything new on Nathan Hallet? Notify Administrator about this message?
