Seeking information on the family and origins of Capt. Jonathan HALLET or HALLETT. He was b. abt. 1748, prob. in NY, and served during the Revolution as a captain in the 2nd NY Regiment of the Continental Line, a unit that was raised in the downstate counties of Westchester, Dutchess, Kings, Queens, and Richmond. He was enum. 1790 in North Salem township, Westchester Co. NY with five sons, two of them 16+, and five slaves -- rather distinctive in the NY of that day. Jonathan HALLET moved bef. 1797 to Salisbury township, in what is now Herkimer Co. NY, and held several elective offices there 1800-1810. He later moved to Fairfield township, where he was enum. in the Census of 1820 and d. Sep 1820. His widow Martha (perhaps his second wife) petitioned Congress for relief in Jan 1830 but is not found thereafter. Jonathan HALLET is bur. at Trinity Episcopal Church in Fairfield, along with his son Stephen HALLET (1785-1827) and dau-in-law Keziah (1799-1848). Jonathan appears to have had as many as eight other children, poss. by two wives, but none of the others has been identified. Neither have Jonathan's parents been identified. Based on his affiliation with a downstate regiment in the Revolution, and his residence in Westchester Co. in 1790, it's tempting to think that he belongs to the numerous HALLET family of New Town, Queens Co. (then a farming suburb of NYC), but I have found nothing to confirm this hunch. I would be grateful for any information or leads that might shed new light on either the parents or the children of Capt. Jonathan HALLET of Herkimer Co. NY. Notify Administrator about this message?
