The book "Roots" was a real human touch of genius, especially on T.V. in the late 1970s. It was viewed coast to coast, and had a dramatic change in one's mind of their ancestors; since almost the last thirty years, genealogy has been a hot topic in America.
Alex Haley has been called a "theif" because he stole others ideas when he wrote the book "Roots". Well, I found out in the fall of 1979, when I was doing landscaping at a wealthy man's home; south of Nashville, Tennessee, he was the owner of the largest book publisher in U.S.A. I asked him about "Roots", and what he knew about the facts of the book and the television "run". He told me his lawyers and advisors told him about Alex Haley, and a good book that would be a huge profit from it's sales. He had a meeting with his company lawyers, and decided to research the book and be sure it was true facts in the book, and see if it wouldn't have any precussions from any lawsuits. His report was the book was to "hot to handle", because it's was to many "not trues" in his book, most names was where Alex Haley, borrowed from other family trees, and was mostly lies, and was to easy to be caught in a lawsuit for millions of dollars from many families. He decided not to publish the book, "Roots" for that reason. He told me he wish he went ahead and publish the book, for the book has a 100% profit for publisher that took the chance, he told me he doesn't like to gamble on anything he has to look over his shoulder, and can sleep good at night, because of it.
My grandparents were Haley's, in fact so was my mother, before she married my father. I know lots about the Haley Families, and many had a few slaves. If a few tales and fabrications was taken from history, we would have a dull history books, for it's full of "big lies" for anyone that has time to read it. As for myself, Alex Haley has a gratitude of appreciation of writing this "Great Book-ROOTS" for it has waken up America of it's Family Heritage they had forgotten in the past. Since then; I have researched countless hours and days and weeks researching my roots, and found names and grandparent's that helped making the history, and fiber of America. Gerald Barnell Fowler
