May 8, 1844 On Monday last, a son of Mr.James W. Haley, of this county, aged about 16 yrs, was most shocking murdered, as is supposed, by a negro woman who was with him at work in a field some distance from the house. It is suppose that young Haley attempted to whip her and, in the attempt lost his life. His face & head was much mangled from the blows of the hoe with the woman was at work, besides his throat was cut nearly from ear to ear. (Jackson, Tn. Whig) I might wrote the newspaper location wrong, or newspaper made the mistake. I think this happen in Madison Co., Ms., and a relative of Major David Haley. For in other papers I have, I remember the slave woman went to trial for this crime, and punishment was death. Gerald Barnell Fowler
