Hi Karen.
I came to this conclusion after doing some more Ancestry digging.
Have since done some more and now CONJECTURE that it is possible that Charles S. Hale was illegitimate. Does your source give a source for a marriage of Catherine Largent to J. W. Hale or is that also conjecture?
In the 1865 State Census both these were still single.
In the 1870 U.S. Census John is with his parents and apparently still single. I have not yet been able to find Catherine anywhere in 1870 unless it is her married to a John Wood 12 pages after John Hale was enumerated.
Do you know anyone that does Johnson or Osage County, Kansas marriage lookups?
