Hi Lesley,
Thanks for your reply to my request. No I have not been able to trace my John Edgar yet. You will find the details of the Haldanes' trip to Victoria on the PROV website under the unassisted passenger lists. I think most men living in South Australia around 1851/2 went to Victoria for the goldrush, some were successful some weren't. Story of my John Edgar is that he came home with an orange, that's all. If you need any help with your Haldane research or are interested in JOhn Edgar please get in contact again.
