Subject; Captain John Haldane
In my previous posting I was looking for a link between Captain John Haldane who was drowned on the wreck of theNancy Packet in 1784 on the Isles Of Scilly and the Haldanes of Gleneagles.I have just come across a note in the Times Newspaper Archive that John left £200 in his will for a memorial to his Grandfather Patrick the 16th Laird of Gleneagles. This appears to be the clue I need.If my reading of the Haldane archive is correct, Patrick had a son George who may have been General George Haldane.George appears not to have married?I am assuming that Captain John (and his brother Henry) are his illegitimate sons because I cannot find any other sons of Patrick.Part of the inscription on the memorial pedestal says:"to one of the best parents, and worthiest of men".
This appear to back up my assumption.I could of course be very wrong and would value any help or comment from knowledgeable Haldane family members.
