Jeff, this won't exactly answer your question, but, for what it's worth, my wife's grandmother's maiden name was Halcomb/Holcomb. She was born in 1894, and lived most of her life in Letcher & Harlan Counties in Kentucky. How her family name was spelled basically depended on who was writing it. In different years, the same person was "Holcomb", "Halcomb", and sometimes others, including "Hawcum"! No wonder the name got "mixed up"! Just like my name. (Scherer & Scherrer are the same family.)
