Entry #1
Reference Source: "McAllister Virginia Militia", page 209

William Halbert was a lieutenant in the Henry County Virginia Militia during the American Revolution.

Reference Source: " Traditions and History of Anderson County", by Louise Ayer Van Diver pgs. 138

William Halbert's father, Joel Halbert, came from Wales and settled in Virginia. Whom he married is unknown, a Virginia girl certainly, as tradition makes this William Halbert eighth in descent from the well known Indian maiden "Pocahontas" and also related to the Randolphs of Virginia.

William was born in Virginia. In 1768 he married Elizabeth Hill and in 1786 they moved to Pendleton, settling on the Saluda River. William Halbert died in 1808, leaving to his wife and to each of his children 200 acres of land and several negros. He was a staunch Whig, and served in the army of Virginia.

After coming to South Carolina he became a man of prominence in his community; served as justice of the peace for many years. He was about five feet nine inches in height, of stout build, and had a red beard.

His children were Joel, Martha, John, Enos, Arthur, James, Susannah, Frances, William Joshua, Elizabeth, Mary and Lucinda. Most of these moved west, and today there are thousands of Halberts in Mississippi, Indiana, and other western states, but in South Carolina there is not one of the name. Joel married Mary Lindsey and went to Indiana in 1819. His daughter Sarah, married Moses Welborn of Anderson County, SC. Another, Ruth, married Amos Acker, youngest son of Peter Acker, Sr. and Jane Southerland

              BIOGRAPHY OF GRANDFATHER HALBERT
Written by Great Grandson J. E. Gaddis in 1922
               Submitted by Roma Gaddis

Joel Halbert was born and reared in South Carolina. He was the son of William Halbert, a sturdy Scotchman. He was the owner of large plantations and many slaves. He married Mary Lindley (his cousin) and had twelve children. Their names were Elihu, Seth, Silas, Enos, John, Sarah, Ruth, Elizabeth, Martha, Palos, Mary and Susan. Sarah and Ruth did not come to Indiana with the rest of the family.

Grandfather was one of the early pioneers. He emigrated to Indiana in the year of 1812. He with his sons and sons-in-law drove through in wagons from South Carolina. They put into camp at what was then known as Rattle Snake Spring, which was about two miles east of the rise of Lost River in Orange County, Indiana.

After locating there, the very next day grandfather threw his leather saddle bags, containing a half bushel or more of gold and silver which he received for his possessions in the homeland, on his trusty horse and with his gun on his shoulder, rode away to Vincennes to the Land Office and entered for a strip of land in Orange County.

On his way back, as he crossed White River at Houghton's Ferry, he noticed sandy soil. He then traveled up the river until he came to the bluff near where Shoals now stands. After examining the soil there, he decided that he could raise cotton as he did in South Carolina. He then returned to camp. The next day after arriving there, he made a second trip to the Land Office and entered for two or three sections of land east of the range line. The county having been organized and named Martin after the first settler, the township was then organized and called Halbert.

Grandfather was a man of great courage and fortitude, coming at that time to a land of unbroken forests, abounding with wild animals such as bears, wolves, catamounts, deer and many others. He knew more hardships and taking chances in a moment that the ordinary man of this age would in a lifetime. He came when there were no bridges, railroads and no manufacturing of any kind. They had everything to do by hand. They felled trees, built houses and set huge slabs eight to ten feet high in the ground to protect their stock from the wild animals.

The mast was so plentiful they only had to feed the hogs a small amount of corn to harden the lard. The woods were full of wild hogs. They had an abundance of bacon for sale which they boated down the river, coming back by the way of New Albany where they bought sole leather, salt and a few edged tools such as axes and saws. They produced their own wool, cotton and flax from which the women carded, spun and wove blankets, bed spreads, jeans and linsey-woolsey.

Grandfather made several trips back to the homeland to get tools, seeds and other things to build up his farm with. The last time he rode through on a horse and on top of the mountains dividing the coast country from the inland, he dismounted, humbly knelt down and prayed fervently to God in whom he trusted for the loved ones he never expected to see again on earth. Then taking one more longing, wistful look at his beloved old home, he rode away to the north west to his new home in Indiana.

Elihu, his oldest son was married twice. His first wife was killed by a bear. He moved to Illinois somewhere near Nauvoo, the Mormon Jerusalem.

Grandfather went to him sometime in 1850. He drove thru in a wagon alone. He was more than eighty years of age and died at Elihu's.

His son Enos married Julia Daugherty and they had three children whose names were Thomas, Seth and Susan. His son Seth married Frances Charles and they had two sons Silas and Enos and a daughter Sarah. His son Silas married a sister of Aaron Houghton and had a son William.

His son married Mary Fox. His daughter Sarah married Acerman. His daughter Ruth married Milburn. They both stayed in South Carolina. Elizabeth married Thomas Evans and to them were born nine sons and three daughters namely: Philip, John, Enos, Joel, Thomas, Silas, Elihu, William, Emanuel, Mary, Sarah and Martha.

Martha married James Horsey. They had three sons Stephen, Clement and Martin and three daughters Palos, Susan, Martha. Palos married Thomas Carlton and to them were born two sons and two daughters. One son Clinton lived to be grown. The daughter Mary was married to Sim Cathers and had two daughters. Susan married Thomas Carlton also and had a child that died in infancy.

Enos Halbert's son Thomas married Rebecca Clark and two of their children lived to be grown. His brother Seth remained single and died in California. Susan died when on a child.

Seth Halbert's son Enos married Susan Shirley. They had one son, Seth, and five daughters. His son Silas married Rhoda Bolton and three sons Enos, William and John. There were five daughters Fanny, Phoebe, Sarah, Rosa and Mary. Silas, Seth's brother had one son William Hilleary who went to California with his aunt Mary Cathers and died there.

Elizabeth Halbert Evans' son married Elizabeth Vandaver and had sons and daughters. Philip married Pernelia Vandaver. Enos, Silas, Thomas, Joel and Elihu all died single. Two of them were killed in the Mexican War. Emanuel died when a child. Mary married Aaron Davis Vandaver. They had three sons: Thomas died single, Zackey died in the Civil War. Aaron married Jane Manning and had sons and daughters. Helen married Anderson Beasly and had one son William. Nancy married John Douglas and two of their children, George and Alice lived to be grown. Her second husband was Joel Deshazo. They had one son Thomas. Mary married Isaac Sipes, but had no children. Lillian died single.

Sarah Evans married Isaac Montgomery and had three sons Robert, John and Seth and two daughters Martha and Phoebe. Robert married Ann Dickson. They had four sons Silas, James, George and John and five daughters Sarah, Phoebe, Mattie, Agnes and Ann.

John married Julia Miller, but they had no children. Martha married Joel Beasley and had sons and daughters. Phoebe married Denton Collins. They had a son Everett and daughter Dama. Seth died single. Sarah's second husband was Barak Gaddis. They had five sons. James went west and was never heard from. David died single while young. Joseph married Anis Clark and had seven sons and seven daughters whose names were Amos, Charles, Dennis, George, Shirley, Everett and Roy, Bernice, Julia, Iva, Ruth, Roma and Stella.

George married Mary Clark and had three sons. Only one reached the age of manhood. His second wife was Emily Owens and to them were born a son Everett and two daughters Lily and Maggie. Maggie died in infancy. Frank lived a single life.
