Charles CARVALHO was born ca. 1792 in Bordeaux, according to family tradition. His marriage certificate only indicates France. It is a fact that CARVALLO families lived during the 18th centuty in Bordeaux, Bayonne and even Saint-Domingue, but it has been impossible at this point to make a connection between these CARVALLO families and Charles CARVALHO. No records mention his parents' name. The marriage certificate indicate "père et mère inconnu".
Family tradition also indicates that his parents were killed in 1804, after independance, when Dessalines ordered that all french white had to be executed. Charles CARVALHO would have been saved by a servant who took the risk of hiding him during the killing, then passing him has her own son of mix blood. It is quite possible that the trauma of what happened to his parents and having to hide his true origins made him obliterate from his memory the name of his parents.
Rose Adélaïde BOYER, aka Titine was born in the USA arround 1796. The name of the father is unknown but her mother's name was just Marguerite. Rose was illiterate and only learned how to write her name late in life. I tend to believe that her father was a French colonist by the name of BOYER who took refuge in the US, like so many others, when the revolution and turmoils started in St Domingue in 1792. Her mother returned with her to Cap Haitien after the independance.
Charles CARVALHO, after working for the Ministry of Finance of Henry Christophe, became a very rich merchant in Cap Haitian.
After having 15 children with Rose BOYER, he married her in Cap-Haitian on April 24th, 1840.
