I have an ancestor named Rocheus PIERRE. His father was Pierre POMPEI. It appears that for at least four generations there was a practice of the son taking the father's first name as his last, but some families stopped this practice earlier than others. They are from Port Salut which is not far from Les Cayes.
In my line, it is the following:
Pierre POMPEI father of Rocheus PIERRE father of Clerisme ROCHER father of Theodore CLERISME. My mother has the name CLERISME, however she has cousins with the name ROCHER because not all the children kept up the custom. It's possible that some others left the tradition earlier and kept PIERRE as a last name. I hope this helps.
