MERCIER, PETTIT/PETIT

I seek info on my ancestor Francis Mercier, who went from Saint Domingue to SC in the 1780's. He moved from Abbeville, SC to Wilkes Co., GA, ca 1790. He m. Elizabeth Pettit/Petit, dau. of Jane and (Benjamin?) Pettit/Petit. Family Tradition says that Francis, and possibly a brother Joseph, both of them doctors (medical doctors??), were b. in France and both went to SC. A son of Francis said in the 1880 Census that his father was b. in France. Was Saint Domingue considered to be part of France? Any info on Francis Mercier will be appreciated.
