I am also a Detres and my family is also from PR. Mayaguez,
San Sebastian and Las Marias.Detres is definately of French origin.Being Hispanic does not gaurentee you a Spanish surname
(ask Bernie Williams!).It is very possible that the family name came to PR from Haiti. My Grandfathers paternal name was Detres
but his maternal name was Leclerc (another French name) and his
grandparents on his mothers side migrated to Las Marias PR from
Port-aux-Prince Haiti. As Boricuas, our roots are not just limited to Spain but they span the world over which is why our culture is so rich.As far as the Detres family name is concerned, you'll find them all over the country.
New York,Chicago,Houston to name a few cities. There are 8 of us just in Richmond Va alone.I've found quite a few in the Paris France telephone directory. I hope you find this information useful
Best Wishes
Cal Detres
